Lions head coach Swys de Bruin has committed to the Johannesburg-based franchise for the 2019 Super Rugby season in spite of potential Springbok opportunities.
De Bruin was Johan Ackermann's assistant coach before taking over the reigns as head coach at the start of this season and has guided the side to their third successive Super Rugby final.
Earlier this year he helped the Springboks as an attacking consultant during the June Tests against Wales and England and there are talks that De Bruin will link up with the Springboks again for the Rugby Championship.
However, he has given assurance that he will honour his Super Rugby contract and remain Lions coach for next year.
In an interview with Netwerk24 he said: “My contract expires after next year’s Super Rugby competition and I intend to honour it.”
He will however not be coaching the Lions for the Currie Cup, meaning he could act again as part of the Springbok management team during the Rugby Championship.
“For me there’s no doubt that Rassie’s on the right track. You can clearly see the focus to be ready for the World Cup and that’s why new combinations are being tested. That’s how things are done,” De Bruin said in June, expressing his enjoyment in being part of the Bok fold.
