The Melbourne Rebels recorded their first ever win over the Lions with a 37-17 home victory in round 6 of Super Rugby. The Rebels opened the scoring with an early penalty and a try midway through the first half saw them up 8-0. The Rebels then picked up a yellow card, but despite their numerical disadvantage went over for a second try to extend their lead out to 15-0. The Lions hit back with a try and the Rebels picked up a yellow card just before the break which saw the visitors slot a penalty to head into halftime trailing just 15-10. The Rebels got off to the perfect start in the second half, with an early try giving them some breathing room. Another Rebels try following 10 minutes later as the hosts headed into the final quarter with a commanding 29-10 advantage. A penalty pushed the Rebels lead out to 22 points, but the Lions responded with a try with under ten minutes remaining. The Rebels would however cross for a late try to resecure the bonus point in a comfortable win.
