Richmond’s all-time leading point scorer Rob Kirby has today called time on his illustrious rugby career.
The kicking supremo who joined Richmond ahead of the 2013/14 season, retires with 164 caps to his name, alongside an incredible 1,293 points. He also claimed the top point scorer award in seven of his eight seasons playing for the first-team.
Before joining Richmond, Kirby enjoyed early rugby success at Southend, Esher and Christchurch Boys High School in New Zealand, playing alongside the likes of All Black Brodie Retallick.
Announcing his retirement Kirby said: “It’s been an unbelievable eight seasons at Richmond, a club I am truly proud to have played for. My highlights over the journey include our two promotions to the Championship, our sensational first half against Bristol (the second not so much), every away trip, train, fun bus home and the ridiculous tours to South Africa, Texas and Croatia.
“I have a lot of special people at Richmond to thank. Steve Hill, Mark Matzopoulos, Rob Powell, Ian Kench and all the coaches for creating an atmosphere where everyone loves their rugby. Michelle Cuthbert and the medical staff (mostly for helping me put my teeth back in). Andy Quigley, Mike Anderson, Dave Feltham and Kate Clements for helping me with all of my lost kicking tees.
“My teammates, thank you for putting up with me for so long. It’s been a pleasure to play alongside you and the wear the Richmond colours. To my opponents, thank you for not tackling me too hard.
“Mum and Dad for following the team all over the country, and Kirsty and Indiana for letting me have one more run around this season. To all the Richmond supporters, you are incredible. I loved every minute of playing in front of you and I look forward to watching from the sidelines next season and catching up over a beer.”
Director of Rugby Steve Hill commented: “Kirby has been at the heart of Richmond’s success since he arrived in 2013. His goal kicking is up there with the all-time best. His contributions on and off the pitch have been huge and he leaves a large hole to be filled. We thank Kirbs for his magnificent service to the club and wish him and his family all the best for the future.”
The club can also confirm the retirements of lock Alex Bibic (24 caps, former Esher) and flanker Tom Pashley (16 caps, former Hartpury). Both players moved to the Athletic Ground ahead of the 2019/20 season and played a key role in our promotion back to the Championship. We would like to thank Alex and Tom for their considerable contribution to Richmond and congratulate them on their achievements.
Richmond also thanks our departing players and coaches for their efforts throughout a challenging 2020/21 season. A special thanks to Attack Coach Mark Matzopoulos who departs Richmond after 14 successful years and experienced back-row Jesse Liston (67 caps) who leaves the club to focus on his coffee business.
