Van Nek, 25, scored a vital try in last weekend’s landmark 36-32 win against the Drua in Suva, as the Brumbies became the first Australian Super Rugby side to win on Fijian soil.
The Rockhampton-born front rower has made 26 Super Rugby appearances thus far for the capital-based franchise and is delighted to prolong his stay in Canberra.
“I feel incredibly fortunate and proud to call Canberra my home,” van Nek said.
“The friendships and connections I’ve made here are truly cherished and I’m honoured to continue playing with the Brumbies.”
Van Nek attended Bremer State High School in his youth, going on to have an impressive junior career, gaining representative honours for the likes of Queensland Schoolboys, Reds Academy, Australian Schoolboys and Brisbane City U19s (2017 and 2018).
The tighthead prop subsequently received a call up to Australia U20s in 2019, before signing on with the Melbourne Rebels the following year. In 2021, he made his Super Rugby debut for the Rebels in his hometown against the Reds at Suncorp Stadium.
Van Nek moved to Canberra in the off-season in 2023 in search of a new opportunity and signed for the Brumbies. He was instantly rewarded, making 12 appearances that season, including three starts. He has since toured Europe with Australia A at the end of last season.
Head coach Stephen Larkham had nothing but praise for the prop as he signed on for the Brumbies for another two years.
"Rhys has been with us for a couple of years now and every year we see growth in his game. He's very passionate about the Brumbies and representing our team," Larkham said.
"He's an outstanding rugby player. His understanding of the way we want to play is top notch and his set-piece work is as good as it comes in Super Rugby.
"We're excited to have him with us for the next two years."
