Rebels vs Brumbies: Players Who Might Have Caught Cheika’s Eye?

In a classic Australian Conference derby, the Melbourne Rebels came from behind to beat the Brumbies 29-26 at AAMI Park on Friday. With the World Cup only a few months away, here are a few players who may have caught the eye of Australia’s coach Michael Cheika during the game.

Tom Banks (Brumbies)

The 24-year-old fullback was busy throughout the match and especially in the first-half which the Brumbies dominated. In 80 minutes, Banks carried the ball 11 times but also managed to make 57 metres, beat two defenders and produce a clean break on the attacking front.

Will Genia (Rebels)

The veteran scrumhalf was an absolute magician this evening although some may argue that he was missing in the first bit of the match. The second-half was superbly controlled by the former Reds star and he also managed to get himself over the try line. The No. 9 managed nine carries in the game, beat four defenders, produce one clean break and an offload.

Dane Haylett-Petty (Rebels)

The 29-year-old was fantastic as a support player this evening and made sure he made everyone else job around him easy. Haylett-Petty made 47 metres in the match and carried the ball upfield on 12 occasions which were the most in the match.

Jack Maddocks(Rebels)

The winger's linkup play with Genia was immense this evening and it ultimately gave him two easy tries. Maddocks made three clean breaks and picked up 26 metres in the fixture. The 22-year-old has now scored 5 tries in 4 games against the Brumbies.

Rob Valentini (Brumbies)

Was the standout forward in the game and got himself on the scoresheet with great following up. Valentini made 10 carries in the match, produced 10 tackles, beat three defenders and turned over the ball once.
