The Harlequins have announced that Phil Swainston has signed a contract extension with the Club. The tighthead Prop has made 23 appearances since joining Harlequins ahead of the 2017/18 season.
The former Wasps player began his career in Harrogate and featured in the 2012/13 England Saxons squad to face Scotland A.
On the announcement, Paul Gustard commented: “I am delighted we have been able to re-sign the Swain Train for another year. When we looked into our retention for the 19/20 season we found ourselves in a situation where we couldn’t accommodate Phil with the overriding need to improve the squad in some other critical areas, allied to the jigsaw of squad composition and the league salary cap. It was a difficult decision to make.
“We have been looking at adding another tighthead to the squad in the belief that Kyle will be away a lot representing England and the depth we required with the two Josh’s moving on.
“With some late movement in our squad in May we were able to look into Swaino’s availability once more. It is, therefore, excellent news for Harlequins and the coaching staff that we have been able to secure Phil’s services. He is a very popular member of the squad and has proven pedigree at Premiership level. He will add good depth in the position and like anyone at the Club is here to compete for a jersey.
“I know this will be a well-received re-signing by the Club such is his standing in the squad and with all of the backroom staff.
“In short it’s a great signing and I’m very pleased he has decided to continue his career with us.”
Phil Swainston added: “I am really happy to have re-signed with Quins.
“There is a great group of boys here going in the right direction under a top quality coaching staff and I’m delighted to be a part of it.
“I’m looking forward to getting back into training with the boys next week and working hard so we can improve on last season.”
