Leinster complete the PRO14 three-peat with a convincing victory

Leinster retain the PRO14 title for the third season in a row as Leo Cullen's side marched to a convincing 27-5 victory in the Guinness PRO14 final on Saturday.

Leinster claim their seventh PRO14 title and third in row as Ulster were unable to impact the scoreboard after James Hume's try in the fourth minute of the game. Garry Ringrose became the youngest captain to lead a side in a PRO14 Final and subsequently becomes the youngest captain to win a final. 

Dan McFarland's side came flying out the blocks with James Hume slicing through the Leinster defence to score a fantastic try, however, that would be the only impact Ulster would make on the scoreline as Leinster shut the men in white out and scored three tries on their way to lifting the trophy.


Leinster didn't take too long to respond to Hume's try with James Lowe finishing off a well-worked team try with Ross Byrne putting his side ahead for the first time with the conversion.


Byrne added another two penalties as Leinster took a 10-5 lead into break. 

Leinster started the second half much like Ulster started the first with Ross Bryne slotting a penalty before Robbie Henshaw picked off a Billy Burns pass to race through to score under the sticks as Leinster led 20-5.


Ulster tried to force their way back into the game but the Leinster defence just suffocated any attack Ulster threw at them.

Caelon Doris put the finishing touches on the victory with a try in the 72nd minute as he forced his way over the line after sustained pressure as reserve flyhalf Jonathan Sexton made it 27-5.

Leinster won all 17 of their PRO14 matches to lift the title and will head into their Champions Cup quarter-final next week against Saracens on a high.

MAN OF THE MATCH

While James Ryan impressed in his first game back in almost seven months while Caelon Doris and Jack Conan shone it was Josh van der Flier who was named man of the match.

It was a clear tactic for van der Flier to chase down Ulster flyhalf Billu Burns and pressurize the flyhalf. He did this well as he forced Burns to make a number of his passes far earlier than he would have liked with Burns also throwing an intercept.
 
 
van der Flier was all over the pitch making 9 tackles without missing and 8 carries while being a consent threat over the ball.
