England prop Joe Marler is considering quitting rugby with immediate effect according to a report by the Mail on Sunday.
According to the report, Marler has become “disillusioned” after receiving a 10 week ban and widespread criticism on social media which led to him to suspend both his Twitter and Instagram accounts.
The incident prompted him to deactivate his accounts on Twitter and Instagram following a torrent of abuse on social media.
Marler still has a year remaining on his current contract at the Harlequins but he has not returned to the club since the Six Nations and The coronavirus lockdown has afforded the front-rower more time with his family and has made him question whether he wants to return to the public scrutiny of a professional sportsman.
The 29-year-old has represented England 71 times since debuting against South Africa in 2012. It also is not the first time he has questioned his appetite for the game, having retired from international rugby in 2018, only to return to the England squad ahead of the Rugby World Cup in Japan.
