James O'Connor nails a perfect 50/22 kick

Super Rugby Australia has been trialling a number of laws during their competition following the 2020 Super Rugby season being called off.

One of those laws has been an adaption of the 50/22 kicking law from rugby league.

The trailed law means that a team kicking from within their own half bounces the ball out in the opposition 22 will get the throw-in to the resulting lineout instead of the opposing team.

A number of teams haven't quite taken full advantage of the law, not through a lack of trying, during the opening rounds of the competition but James O'Connor got it spot on Friday against the Western Force.

The Wallaby received the ball from Tate McDermott behind his 10m line and launched the ball deep into the Western Force 22 with the ball bouncing out about 7 metres shy of the try line.

What made the kick even better was what occurred afterwards with the Reds winning the lineout through captain Liam Wright who popped the ball down to Tate McDermott with Taniela Tupou powering over moments later.

The Queensland Reds went on to defeat the Western Force in a 31-24 thriller to keep their unbeaten start to the Super Rugby AU season intact. Queensland rallied from 14-nil down in as many minutes to lead 21-19 at the half-time break.
