HIGHLIGHTS: 2018 TRC Rd 5: South Africa v Australia
- 2901
South Africa made it back to back wins in the Rugby Championship as they ground out a 23-12 home win over Australia in round 5. South Africa were gifted an intercept try in the opening 30 seconds of the match and followed that up with a second score to storm into a 14-0 lead. Australia hit back with two tries in quick succession to trail 14-12. The Springboks kept the scoreboard ticking over with two late first half penalties seeing the hosts into the break with a 20-12 advantage. An early second half penalty extended the Springboks lead to 11 points at 23-12. It was all Australia thereafter, as the visitors laid siege to the South African 22. The pressure eventually told as South Africa picked up a yellow card with 15 minutes to play for repeated penalties. Try as they might, the Wallabies could not get back into the match thanks to some heroic Springbok defence, which would ultimately prove the decisive difference in the outcome of the match.
