Genge off the hook after attack on Sexton

Genge off the hook after attack on Sexton

England loosehead prop Ellis Genge will receive no sanction after attacking Ireland captain Johnny Sexton’s face with the elbow during their Round 5 Six Nations clash on Saturday evening.

Genge and Sexton became involved in a scuffle on the ground late in the second half as England carried out an assault on the Irish try-line. The camera angle clearly shows Genge applying liberal use of the elbow to Sexton’s facial area.

However, the window for an application to cite the player has passed, leaving Genge off the proverbial hook.

Any notion that Genge perhaps felt remorse for his actions afterwards was dispelled when, after Sexton reported the incident to referee Mathieu Raynal, Genge appears to address the flyhalf, saying “Yeah, I did. I did.”

Among those who took to social media to express their anger was legendary Springbok prop Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira, who Tweeted: “This Ellis Genge dude needs to be dealt with properly.”

England find themselves in something of a rut at present after a disappointing 2021 Six Nations campaign and calls for heads to roll have grown in volume.
