Champions Cup: What happens if the scores are level after 80 minutes?

The quarter-finals of the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup kick off this weekend with a blockbuster round of action.

In the Challenge Cup, Sale Sharks host Connacht in the only match on Friday evening before an all-Premiership clash sees Worcester Warriors host Harlequins. On Sunday, Bristol Bears travel to France to take on La Rochelle at the imposing Stade Marcel-Deflandre before the weekend is rounded off with Clermont hosting Northampton Saints.

The Champions Cup kicks off on Saturday with Munster visiting Edinburgh the Scottish Capital before Saracens host Glasgow and Leinster host Ulster.

With the competition heading into the knock out stages, we take a look at what happens if the scores are level after the initial 80 minutes:

Extra Time:

The two sides will face off in two 10 minute halves of extra time. If the sides are still level after the 20 minutes of extra time, the side that scored the most tries in the match will be declared as the winner (extra time included).

If the sides are level on points and tries after extra time and kicking competition will decide who progresses into the semi-final.

How the kicking competition works:

Each side will nominate three goalkickers. The kickers don't have to be predetermined but the three players nominated must be selected from the squad of players on the pitch when the final whistle is blown.

No substituted or dismissed player may take part in the competition. Each kicker will attempt kicks from designated positions on the 22 & 10m lines. After each side has taken their six kicks a winner will be declared.

If the teams are still deadlocked the competition will continue on a sudden-death basis.

This has happened in the Champions Cup semi-final during the 2008/9 season between the Cardiff Blues and Leicester Tigers.
