Cambridge Rugby are pleased to announce the signing of front row forward Huw Owen from former Championship side Jersey Reds.
Two weeks ago, Jersey Reds confirmed that they have withdrawn from the league structure, so will not play in the Championship this season, after the club entered administration in September.
Owen was pleased to be awarded the opportunity to return to the league despite the news from Jersey.
He said: “I’m very excited to be joining Cambridge and being a part of their Championship journey.
“After everything at Jersey, to be a handed a playing opportunity in the Championship with such a brilliant club has been a wonderful rugby lifeline.
“Hopefully I can contribute positively to what Richie and the team are looking to achieve this year. I’m excited to getting stuck in!”
Head Coach Richie Williams is also excited by his new signing, who boasts experience from sides such as Cardiff and Pontypridd before joining Jersey Reds for the 2021/22 season.
He added: “29-year-old Owen will be a welcome addition to the squad this season and brings with him a wealth of championship experience.
“Over the past few seasons, our scrum has become a real weapon and this signing ensures that we will continue to expand this important aspect of our game.”
Huw Owen joins fellow prop forwards, Harry Morley, Seb Brownhill, Jake Elwood, Billy Walker and Matty Collins in the 2023-24 squad.
Cambridge are back in action for round three heading to the capital to face Ealing Trailfinders on Saturday 4 November at 3pm.
