All Blacks Return as Southern Rivals Face Off on Waitangi Day

Added lustre will be provided with the return of All Blacks to both sides in the regular two-halves game.

Highlanders head coach Jamie Joseph said, "We're incredibly excited to round out our preseason with such an exciting encounter on Waitangi Day.

"Playing against the Crusaders is always a massive challenge, but it's one our players are ready for. We know the fans in Invercargill will create an electric atmosphere, and we're looking forward to delivering a great performance."

All Blacks prop Ethan de Groot is starting in the front row, with Saula Mau at tighthead and Soane Vikena hooking.

Fabian Holland and Mitchell Dunshea are locking while former Hurricane TK Howden plays on the blindside flank with Veveni Lasaqa on the openside and co-captain Hugh Renton at No8.

Folau Fakatava and Cameron Millar start at halfback and first five-eighths, respectively, and co-captain Timoci Tavatavanawai is playing second five-eighths. Taniela Tele'a is at centre, while Jona Nareki and Caleb Tangitau are on the wings with Sam Gilbert at fullback.

New Crusaders captain David Havili said, "I can't wait to lead the team out on Thursday. I had itchy feet sitting on the sideline in Kirwee last week, so I'm excited to get into it."

Fullback Will Jordan is another anticipating returning to play.

"It's so good to be back. After missing the whole 2024 season, it's unreal to be putting on the red and black again. I'm looking forward to heading down south for a good old southern derby."

Dallas McLeod will be paired with Havili in the centres, while halfback Noah Hotham and first five-eighths Taha Kemara will start. Sevu Reece and Chay Fihaki will play on the wings.

The forward pack will be bolstered by the return of an All Blacks front row with props Tamaiti Williams and Fletcher Newell joining hooker George Bell. Antonio Shalfoon and Tahlor Cahill will lock and loose forwards Ethan Blackadder, Cullen Grace and Christian Lio-Willie will complete the pack.

Thursday 6 February, 2.30pm: Highlanders v Crusaders – Rugby Park Stadium, Invercargill
