Alby Mathewson joins Canterbury squad

Former All Black halfback Alby Mathewson has joined the Canterbury Mitre 10 Cup squad as injury cover for Mitchell Drummond.

“It is hugely disappointing to lose Mitchell Drummond to injury for the rest of the season, particularly when he’s been playing as well as he has.  But we are really excited to be able to bring Alby into the group and know that he will have a really positive contribution to make with his immense experience as a player,” said Canterbury Head Coach Scott Robertson.

Mathewson has most recently been playing for the Western Force Super Rugby team, but previously represented the All Blacks for 4 tests in 2010 and has played for Wellington, Auckland and Hawke’s Bay in the national provincial competition.

Mitchell Drummond broke his fibula in a training session last week, ruling him out of the remainder of the Mitre 10 Cup season, with Mathewson replacing him today.
