The Reds take a 22-9 lead over the Waratahs into halftime. The Waratahs started brightly with two early penalties, but the Reds hit back with the games first try to lead 7-6. A second try for the Reds around the half hour mark was followed by a penalty as they opened up a 17-6 lead. The Waratahs pulled three points back with a late third penalty, but the Reds would run in their third try with the final play of the half for a 13 point advantage at the break.
