Ireland take a slender 19-17 lead over Japan into halftime. Japan opened the scoring with a penalty just three minutes in, but Ireland hit back with the game's first try five minutes later to lead 7-3. Japan responded shortly after with their first try, but a second for Ireland saw them up 12-10 after 27 minutes. Japan had a chance to edge ahead, but their penalty attempt around the half hour mark hit he post. Japan did regain the lead with a try with five minute remaining in the half, but an Irish score with the final play sees the hosts up by two points at the break.
