Reddish looked to have gotten the last say before the break. But an error off the restart handed West the chance to increase the gap on the buzzer. The under dogs definitely got the better start with 2 tries in the 1st quarter. But it was only a matter of time before the Lions got into the game. They did so on 24 minutes through a very powerful scrum and some clever footwork form Vito. Wellington have done well to get back into this game but the boot of Ihaia West is still the difference between the sides. Big 2nd 40 to come!
This time Vito is rewarded. A strong lineout drive made several metres before a number of pick and goes resulted in the powerful Reddish crossing to narrow the gap before HT
Vito opts to go down the line after winning another penalty off the restart. Big 3/4 minutes before the break. WIll the brave call pay off?
Off the ensuing scrum a poor pass and worse handling from Palu and Sopoaga sees the ball hit the deck. Mathewson hacks the ball towards the line. Hill is there to cover but can only gather before taking it over his own line and getting tackled. Scrum 5 - Magpies.
Hawke's Bay are looking very threatening through their backs. A simple skip pass brings Zac Guildford and Telusa Veainu onto the front foot. In the end a knock on off Guildford ends the attack after making 20+ metres.
Superb scrum from Wellington. 5m out they dig deep to power towards the Magpies line. Great control from Vito at the back allowed him to keep the ball at the back as his pack marched towards the line before he could simply pick and fall over the line.
Vito goes to the corner with a penalty to launch their first real attack. The ball is over thrown and Horrell breaks up field before being cut down after a 40m gain.
The Magpies cut through again! Ihaia West takes the ball all the way to the line and offloads to Horrell. The inside centre juggles with it before offloading to Buckman and then Veainu for a great try from the backs.
Controversial stuff here in Napier! West goes down the line with a massive penalty but the ball appeared to stay in as Alapati Leiua fielded the ball. But the TJ insisted the ball was in touch. Replays showed Leiua was justified in his protests, he was clearly in the field of play. Off the line out the forwards punched it up under the post before Zac Guildford cut a sharp line to cut in between two forwards to cross for the games first try.
Another interesting stat: 15 of Wellington's 22 have played Super Rugby while only 7 the Magpies have that kind of experience.
