A product of Grey College Bloemfontein hooker Frankie Herne featured for the South African Schools Academy side in 2007.
After school he played in the 2009 Varsity Cup for Shimlas and was part of the Free State Cheetahs squad for the 2010 Vodacom Cup.
In 2011 he moved to the the Eastern Province Kings and he represented this between 2011 and 2012, before joining the Pumas in 2013.
In 2013, he was included in a South Africa President's XV team that won the 2013 IRB Tbilisi Cup.
He was a member of the Pumas side that won the Vodacom Cup for the first time in 2015, beating Western Province 24–7 in the final.
He has since become a vital cog in the Pumas scrum picking up four awards in 2016 including Currie Cup Player of the Year, Best Forward Player, Most Tries Scored and the Pumas Player of the Year.
